So, the one coop (10’x 10″ chainlink dog kennel with wire mesh around the bottom 2′ and roosting areas) has had a 3/4″ plywood roof that’s held up for 3 years. Triple coat of exterior latex, slope, worked pretty well.
Happen to look out this morning to see a nice fresh hole clawed through by something. Big hole too, but no dead or missing birds so it must have gotten spooked by the dogs or something. I was thinking racoon, but with the size of the hole it should have been in and out with a bird no problem. Fox I’d assume would have been in and killed a bunch. Bobcat maybe. Either way… By the time I realized this is an issue that needs to be dealt with, it’s sunny af.
I ended up roofing it in scrap tin for now. Only thing I had handy was drywall screws, so it’s definitely not ideal or a long term solution. There’s also some frame rot I need to address, so the whole roof needs redone eventually. But, let me tell you, it was a joy rush-roofing with corrugated steel, a hammer and an impact driver in direct sun with an air temp of 99. I understand how a roast in a solar over feels 😂 Had to stop and find a glove before I ended up with 2nd degree burns setting screws through the shit.
But nothing’s getting through that roof tonight.
So, tell us about the emergency repairs you’ve had to make for your birds! Predator issues, equipment failure, temporary housing? I bet we all have a few stories of redneck engineering.
